Christmas Dinner

We had our family Christmas dinner early this year so that Dad could be with us before he flew to meet Mom, my sister Lindsey and her husband, and most of the rest of our extended family in Ontario.

These photo sessions usually dissolve into hysterics at some point as one or more camera timers go off before they are expected to and there are various shots of people's backsides as they are running to get into the back row of the picture or diving for the floor spot in front. This time didn't disappoint either. I don't have any of the "bloopers" on my camera but I'm sure I can hunt one of two down...

We had an excellent dinner and a nice, relaxing evening together. Fun, food, and fellowship!

My brother-in-law Andrew; Dad; David (pretty much a brother to our family); Aunty Hilary (David's mom); Grandpa Ib (our adopted Danish grandpa); Dwayne; Hendrik; Jen(me); Riley (on Jen's lap); my youngest sister Christen.

The house!!!

Here are a few pictures to get you started. The kitchen, bathroom and loft are almost indiscernible right now so you'll have to settle for the living room until we get some more organizing done. :)

But first, what's a log home without a little taxidermy?

MOVING!!! ~ No phone...

We are in the middle of moving this week. We spent the first night at our new house on Saturday night. However, we are without a phone as the phone company is trying to get service set up for us. Hopefully we will be back soon with pictures of the new place and an update!

The Birthday Girl

Watching Strawberry Shortcake with her big brother.

Bathtime!

Caught between smiles and making funny noises. :)

A little bit of excitement.

Studying her new toys.

An audience with our little princess.

Happy 1st Birthday Riley!

Our sweet baby girl is one today! I can't believe how fast the year has gone by. Riley is the most mellow, happy baby anyone could wish for. We are so proud of Riley and of how she growing and developing. :)

Riley has quite the collection of pet names. Here are the most common ones:

"Sweet Pea"
"Leigh-leigh" (Hendrik's name for her before he could say her full name. We've spelled it like Aunty Christen's middle name.)
"Miss Riley"
"Smiley Riley"
"Riley Pie"
"Muffin"
"Pumpkin"

We will open a present or two with her today but will save having cake for the weekend when everyone is feeling 100% again.

Don't worry Grandmas, there will be pictures to follow soon!

Little People

"Many cunning tricks & a great deal of noise." You'd never guess by the way she's sleeping now. :)

Hendrik's favourite photo expression lately.

Kidlets!

Riley, like her big brother, loves tools. She managed to find a screwdriver...

Not so happy when Mommy took the screwdriver away.

A very serious looking Hendrik after his nap.

The Latest

The kids and I went for a drive this afternoon to see how things were coming along at the house. It is starting to look more and more finished. The fridge and stove are both inside now and Dwayne was finishing off the shower stall. There are piles of boxes and bins everywhere. We are hoping that we will be able to spend the night out there very soon.

Tonight Dwayne and Dad moved out some more of our furniture - couch, chair, dining chairs, dining table, bench, assorted pictures, etc.

Here is the kitchen! The odd shaped white object on the floor is the range hood waiting to be installed. The dishwasher will sit to the left of the fridge and eventually we will put up some cupboards to the right of the fridge. Pardon the array of tools spread everywhere!

Here is the shower stall. The little white bits you see are tile spacers. We'll take those out when we grout the shower tomorrow. The pipe sticking out on the right of the picture is for the sink which has been moved out of the way to make it easier to tile and grout the shower.

Dwayne, hard at work, as usual!

Pregnant belly!

Here is my belly at 6 months! :)

A sneak peak!

Here is a little look at our house after Dwayne installed the flooring this past weekend.

Here are the kids trying out the new floor:

Here is the kitchen area. The door leaning against the wall is for the bathroom and the dishwasher and fridge will go on that wall instead. :)

Another view of the kitchen. The stove and range hood will go to the right between the end of the counter and the front door.

Hendrik riding his bike in the living room. To the right you can see a sliver of the backdoor. We will also be changing woodstoves for a more user friendly model.

Sick, sick, sick.

The last few nights have not been the most restful around here. Both Hendrik and Riley have come down with colds and Hendrik has developed quite the cough. He seems to cough most until 4 a.m. and then Riley takes over for the next shift. Between the coughing and having 3-4 people in our bed at once we are running a little low on sleep. Hopefully everyone is feeling much better very soon. Little kids with colds are so pitiful!

Miss Riley pulls herself to standing!

Dwayne and I happened to glance over and catch Riley standing, holding onto Hendrik's little red couch. This is a first for her. :) We managed to get a quick couple of pictures before she decided to sit back down. (She has her knees bent here a little as she's thinking about sitting back down and her p.j.'s are a little big so she looks very short in these pictures.)

Fire Hall Open House

Our local fire hall had an open house today as part of Fire Prevention Week. Hendrik was thrilled to be able to see the fire engines up close and also climb on them a bit too. He got a plastic "Junior Fire Chief" hat which he loves. It was a little bit windy this afternoon so I ended up chasing it a few times. In these pictures he is keeping one hand on his hat - just in case. :)

Riley observing from the Ellaroo.

Moose hunting

Here are a few pictures from our hunting trip last weekend.

Poor little Riley had a rough weekend. She was getting over a cough and cold and was also teething. Thankfully, the tooth finally came through (after 2 months!!!) the day before we came home!

Ultrasound pictures

Friday we had our first ultrasound done. I say first because I've had repeats with both Hendrik and Riley as neither would quite cooperate enough to see everything that the tech wanted to see. This baby was no exception. While we could tell the gender of this baby, which we did not find out, it didn't want to give us a clear view of it's face. The tech wasn't sure if we'd have to go back for another ultrasound as she said they only use that view to rule out cleft palate. We will see.

This baby is quite the little boxer. It's hands were going the whole time we were watching. It also appears that it may be a thumb sucker like it's older siblings.

Here are a few glimpses of our baby!

Hendrik's Big Brown Truck

This is the gravel truck we brought back from the Edmonton area for a friend. Hendrik got to drive back with his daddy in the big brown truck.

Napping, napping, and napping some more.

We've all been pretty draggy around here today. We managed to get out of the house to get groceries just before lunch and then after lunch we went to my prenatal appointment and checked the mail. Since then, it's been all about napping. I wanted to put the little guy to bed because he was really acting up, a sure sign of him being tired. At the same time our little girl was fussing for her mommy. So, I put Hendrik into our bed for his nap and made a little bed of quilts on the living room floor for Riley and I.

After a few minutes I went and checked on Hendrik. He was still awake but sleepy and very pitiful looking all alone in the big bed. I asked if he wanted to come and nap with Riley and I. He readily agreed. It turned out that Riley fell asleep, followed by me, with Hendrik not sleeping at all but playing with a bunch of his cars and trucks and me being too tired to be upset that he wasn't napping.

Then I awoke to find Riley awake and playing and Hendrik passed out by one of his toys. I nursed Riley and she fell asleep and then so did I.

I woke up to both kids still asleep. Hendrik woke up several minutes later and walked a few feet across the living room and decided to curl up beside his sister for another nap.

At least everyone is on the same page this afternoon! :)

Home again, home again, jiggety, jig! or We brought home everything INCLUDING the kitchen sink...

Well, we are home! We had a very busy week. We left Monday morning at 2 a.m. and arrived in Edmonton later that day. Tuesday we were glad to be able to have a visit with the Hills and to meet the girls they adopted from Ethiopia. We had a wonderful time. Hendrik had his dental appointment and surgery on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. Everything went off without a hitch and the dentist didn't have to do quite as much as he initially thought. Hendrik came out of the anesthetic beautifully and wasn't sick at all. We spent the rest of Wednesday at Ikea, Home Depot, and The Brick shopping for the new house. We now have everything we need except for our propane kitchen stove which we will order from Sears. Thursday we did a few more errands around the city to Fabricland, Lee Valley Tools, picked up some Argo and truck parts for friends and then headed for Athabasca in the afternoon to pick up a gravel truck for a friend. It wasn't quite ready so we stayed overnight and picked it up the next morning. (Hendrik got to ride back with Dwayne in the rig. You can imagine how exciting that was for him.) After we picked up the truck it was off to UFA to get a water tank, cinder blocks, fence posts and work gloves. We stayed overnight in High Level and then came the rest of the way home on Saturday afternoon. We are busy unpacking, assembling Ikea furniture and trying to get rid of the colds we picked up in Edmonton. The kids were amazing little travellers and shoppers. Troopers!

Hendrik's favourite spot

Hendrik loves to play in our "practice cabin". We built a small 12 X 12 building a couple of summers ago to try out some building techniques. Hendrik has adopted it as his own. Right now it is quite full of tools and building supplies but he still loves to play in and around it.
